Visa Status (Stamp 2A)
When an individual applies for a study visa to study in Ireland for a bachelor's degree, post-graduate diploma, master's degree or even a PhD, the visa is granted for a period of six months only from the time it is approved. This gives the student enough time to pack, get accommodation, get a flight and make the move which will roughly take a month. This visa stamp is Stamp 2A. Read further here.
In my case, I received my visa in late July and moved to Ireland in the first week of October which gave me just short of four months to apply for an extension.

Upon arrival, the customs officer mentions that you have three months to get an appointment at the nearest Garda office to apply for a visa extension.
